Schedules & Hitch

Conservation & Disaster crews can expect a mix of local projects and hitching projects throughout your term. Hitch schedule(s) might not always follow this schedule due to the needs of project partners. For instance, we have had a few 15-day hitches, or the schedule may potentially have a 7-day hitch

What is a hitch?

A hitch is a 5- or 10-day project, where you camp at your project site:

Day 1: Members arrive at our office with their camping gear, clothes, toiletries, and maybe a good book. The crew will pack a van & trailer with tools and equipment, kitchen gear, and their personal camping gear. Once the crew is ready, they go grocery shopping and hit the road! Upon arrival at the project site members set up camp while the crew leaders meet with the project partner.

Days 2-9: The crew will wake up bright and early, have breakfast, pack a lunch, and then start their day with a stretch circle/PT. The crew will then head to the worksite and work up to 8.5 hours each day. After work, they head to camp where members take turns cooking and doing dishes. Evenings are often spent reading, hanging out by a campfire, or playing games. From there the crew heads to their tents to get a good night’s rest.

Day 10: Time to head home! The crew will load up and head back to their home base. Upon arrival at the office, you will de‐rig by putting away kitchen gear and making sure tools are cleaned, maintained, and put away properly. After that, you can head home to enjoy your days off!

Schedules can change at any point during the season.

Some instances where a crew’s schedule may change is if:

  • A project partner cancels due to weather or if the partner becomes unavailable
  • Materials for a project are not available
  • If our Disaster Response Teams are deployed, we will reorganize our project schedule to ensure priority projects are completed by the other non-deployed crews.
